The Black Holes at Sea

Researchers from the Swiss Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) and the University of Miami in the United States got the fact that the giant whirlpool in the ocean turned out to have mathematical similarities with the Black Hole. The whirlpool surrounded by water flow is very tight, and suck up whatever is around it.

Mild winters in northern Europe occur due to warm ocean currents of the Atlantic Ocean. The ocean currents spread throughout the world and affects climate. Increased number of giant whirlpools in the Antarctic Ocean. This giant whirlpool is caused the warm and salt water flow also increased. But the giant whirlpool predicted can reduce the negative impacts ice melting on the sea due to global warming.

The ocean eddies effect is not certain, because the difficulty to detected the whirlpool boundaries. George Haller, professor of Nonlinear Dynamics at ETH Zurich, and Francisco Beron-Vera, a oceanographic researchers at the University of Miami, developed a math-based method to find the whirlpool boundaries.

Challenge is to determine the whirlpool boundaries is hard to find a coherent islands as a count benchmark. The water spin in irregular movements, both inside and outside the whirlpool. Haller and Beron-Vera, in a publication which appeared in The Journal of Fluid Mechanics, mid- September 2013, preparing the chaotic situation by isolating the coherent islands through satellite observations. The results showed that the whirlpool has mathematical similarities with the black hole.

Black hole is an object in space with an unusually large mass that can suck anything, including light. However, at a certain distance, instead of spinning and sucked, then curving light it back to its original position and form a circular orbit. Field barrier formed by the orbits of light in Albert Einstein's Relativity theory called the photons circle.

Haller and Beron-Vera find find areas of similar barrier around the whirlpool. On the field, the fluid particles rotating in a closed circular shaped, similar to the light in photons circle. Just as the black hole, nothing can escape after that sucked by giant whirlpool.

However the ocean eddies considered quite stable so that it can serve as transporter. The materials and microorganisms, such as plankton, plastic waste, and oil, to warm water and salt content can be moved to different waters. The same thing appears when Beron-Vera and Haller observe the Agulhas Rings, whirlpool which appear regularly in the Antartic Ocean that adjacent to the southern tip of African continent.
