All-Terrain Electric Defender

In the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, the British SUV manufacturer, Jaguar Land Rover (LR), surprises with showcased of seven Electric Defender models. The diesel engine and the gearbox was replaced by an electric motor-powered 94 hp and 330 Nm of torque comes Lithium-ion 300 volts with a capacity of 27 kWh.

Land Rover uses Defender 110 classic is equipped with an electric motor in the drivetrain system test. The results will be used for a new generation of environmentally friendly Defender in the future. Each car can roam up to 80 km. When used on offroad terrain by slowly drive, the car can run up to 8 hours before recharge. The battery can be recharged in four hours using 7 kW fast charger, but it will take 10 hours if filled by 3 kW portable charger.

Electric Defender retains its classic drive system such as 4-wheel drive and differential lock. Because electric motors deliver maximum torque instantly from the running, the gear shift is not required, and the transmission consists of one speed only. Reduction gearbox ratio 2,7:1 combined with 4-WD system.

These cars were developed by Advanced Engineering Team of Land Rover. The battery (410 kg) is located under the bonnet (diesel substitute). Vehicle weight of about 100 kg heavier than Defender 110, to between 2,055 to 2,162 kg depending its variant models such as pickup, hard top, or station wagon.

Electric Defender still applied the all-wheel drive with a CVT transmission. The cars line that appears on the Jaguar Land Rover display is also tested through the various types of terrain, from asphalt to off-road, in accordance with his character. The process is like running an experiment to observe the ability of an electric vehicle, even for extreme terrain.

As revealed by Anthony Harper, Jaguar Land Rover's Head of Research to Carscoop, the opportunity to see the process as well as developing some new technology that will be used on Land Rover models in the future.
